COVID is surging in Australia – and only 1 in 5 older adults are up to date with their boosters

Adrian Esterman, University of South Australia

Do you have family members or friends sick with a respiratory infection? If so, there’s a good chance it’s COVID, caused by the JN.1 variant currently circulating in Australia.

In particular, New South Wales is reportedly experiencing its highest levels of COVID infections in a year, while Victoria is said to be facing a “double wave” after a surge late last year.

But nearly four years into the pandemic, data collection is less comprehensive than it was, and of course, fewer people are testing. So what do we know about the extent of this wave? And importantly, are we adequately protected?

Difficulties with data

Tracking COVID numbers was easier in the first half of last year, when each state and territory provided a weekly update, giving us data on case notifications, hospitalisations, ICU numbers and deaths.

In the second half of the year some states and territories switched to less frequent reporting while others stopped their regular updates. As a result, different jurisdictions now report at different intervals and provide varying statistics.

For example, Victoria still provides weekly reports, while NSW publishes fortnightly updates.

While each offer different metrics, we can gather – particularly from data on hospitalisations – that both states are experiencing a wave. We’re also seeing high levels of COVID in wastewater.

Meanwhile, Northern Territory Health simply tell you to go to the Australian government’s Department of Health website for COVID data. This houses the only national COVID data collection. Unfortunately, it’s not up to date, difficult to use, and, depending on the statistic, often provides no state and territory breakdowns.

Actual case notifications are provided on a separate website, although given the lack of testing, these are likely to be highly inaccurate.

The Department of Health website does provide some other data that gives us clues as to what’s happening. For example, as of one month ago, there were 317 active outbreaks of COVID in aged care homes. This figure has been generally rising since September.

Monthly prescriptions for antivirals on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme were increasing rapidly in November, but we are not given more recent data on this.

It’s also difficult to obtain information about currently circulating strains. Data expert Mike Honey provides a regularly updated snapshot for Australia based on data from GISAID (the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data) that shows JN.1 rising in prevalence and accounting for about 40% of samples two weeks ago. The proportion is presumably higher now.

What’s happening elsewhere?

Many other countries are currently going through a COVID wave, probably driven to a large extent by JN.1. These include New Zealand, Spain, Greece and the United States.

According to cardiologist and scientist Eric Topol, the US is currently experiencing its second biggest wave since the start of the pandemic, linked to JN.1.

Are vaccines still effective?

It’s expected the current COVID vaccines, which target the omicron variant XBB.1.5, are still effective at reducing hospitalisations and deaths from JN.1 (also an omicron offshoot).

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) updated their advice on booster shots in September last year. They recommended adults aged over 75 should receive an additional COVID vaccine dose in 2023 if six months had passed since their last dose.

They also suggest all adults aged 65 to 74 (plus adults of any age who are severely immunocompromised) should consider getting an updated booster. They say younger people or older adults who are not severely immunocompromised and have already had a dose in 2023 don’t need further doses.

This advice is very confusing. For example, although ATAGI does not recommend additional booster shots for younger age groups, does this mean they’re not allowed to have one?

In any case, as of December 6, only 19% of people aged 65 and over had received a booster shot in the last six months. For those aged 75 and over, this figure is 23%. Where is the messaging to these at-risk groups explaining why updating their boosters is so important?

Should we be concerned by this wave?

That depends on who we mean by “we”. For those who are vulnerable, absolutely. Mainly because so few have received an updated booster shot and very few people, including the elderly, are wearing masks.

For the majority of people, a COVID infection is unlikely to be serious. The biggest concern for younger people is the risk of long COVID, which research suggests increases with each reinfection.

What should we expect in 2024?

It’s highly likely we will see repeated waves of infections over the next 12 months and beyond, mainly caused by waning immunity from previous infection, vaccination or both, and new subvariants.

Unless a new subvariant causes more severe disease (and at this stage, there’s no evidence JN.1 does), we should be able to manage quite well, without our hospitals becoming overwhelmed. However, we should be doing more to protect our vulnerable population. Having only one in five older people up to date with a booster and more than 300 outbreaks in aged care homes is not acceptable.

For those who are vulnerable, the usual advice applies. Make sure you’re up to date with your booster shots, wear a P2/N95 mask when out and about, and if you do get infected, take antivirals as soon as possible.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. "I just don't like old skin": Jane Fonda's bizarre confession

Jane Fonda has made an unusual confession about her dating life, explaining why she would only date people of a certain age.

The Hollywood legend, 85, has been married three times throughout her life: first to director Roger Vadim from 1965 to 1973, then to activist Tom Hayden from 1973 to 1990, and finally to CNN founder Ted Turner from 1991 to 2001.

Fonda is currently single, but doesn't plan on staying that way.

Despite being open to finding love, the actress has a very specific criteria for potential suitors to meet before agreeing to a date.

On the Absolutely Not podcast, the Oscar winner initially suggested she was done with men for good, saying, “I’m done, I’m over, I’m [almost] 86 years old, even in the dark I wouldn’t want to be naked in front of anybody.”

But she then went on to confess that there’s still a chance she could fall for a man, but they would just have to be substantially younger.

“And here’s another thing, I’m ashamed to say this, if I were to take a lover, he’d have to be 20. Because I don’t like old skin,” said Fonda.

She continued, “And consequently, I don’t want to foist that on anybody else. I assume other people are like me, I just don’t like old skin.”

“I disapprove of 86-year-old men with 20-year-old women, so I’m not going to repeat it. I can ogle them, and I can’t pretend that I don’t get turned on if I see a certain kind of a person, but no, no, no, I don’t want to force that on anybody.”

Her confession has been criticised on social media, with some suggesting the star would be “cancelled” if it was a man that had said the same about young women.

“This is seriously weird,” tweeted one fan, while another said: “But an 85 year old man wanting to date a 20 year old woman is disgusting? Am I right?”

Thief asks woman out on date after robbing her at gunpoint

A US woman has gone through the harrowing experience of being robbed at gunpoint, but it was what happened after the fact that was almost as eerie.

Amber Beraun was checking the mail one night at her Indianapolis home in May when she was approached by a man with a gun.

The gunman was later identified as Damien Boyce.

Speaking to WRTV, Beraun said she was confronted by Boyce, who attempted to enter her home. She refused and gave him all the cash she had handy, which came to $100.

Before he made his escape, Boyce asked Beraun a very unexpected, and quite frankly bizarre question - to add him on Facebook.

The thief also noted he was planning to pay her back.

Beraun responded, telling him she “believed” him and that “times just get rough”.

Boyce proceeded to ask the woman to “come chill”.

He was later arrested by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and charged over a separate armed robbery on June 12, where two people got shot and one was hit in the head with a brick.

He was also charged with his robbery of Beraun.

Beraun said her local neighbourhood has been affected by the terrifying incident.

"It makes me a little on edge knowing that people walk up and down the street, looking for places to commit crimes," she said.

"It makes it a little different when you hear noises at night."

Beraun insisted she "never" thought something like this would happen to her.

"He took away my sense of safety from my home."

Tracy Grimshaw’s rumoured TV return

Tracy Grimshaw is rumoured to return to TV less than a year after her A Current Affair exit, with a "secret project" in the works with Nine, according to an insider.

The veteran presenter reportedly made a low-key entrance into the Nine offices earlier this month to meet up with their bosses and pitch some new ideas.

"They were very surprised to hear from her but excited to see what she'd been working on," the insider told Woman's Day, and added that at least one of the ideas she pitched is already in the works.

"Tracy could be back on our screens as early as 2024!" the insider said.

The TV star’s change of mind is reportedly inspired by Ally Langdon's flourishing career as the new host of A Current Affair.

"Tracy is telling friends she may have made a big mistake. She has so much time on her hands and has been watching Ally flourish, and it's made her miss the thrill of TV."

"She's started to think that maybe she isn't done after all, and she knows Nine will always welcome her back, in whichever capacity she chooses,” the insider revealed.

Ally Langdon was one of the front-runners to replace Grimshaw among other contenders including Carrie Bickmore, Deborah Knight, and Sylvia Jeffreys.

Langdon has proven that she is a worthy replacement after bringing in 1.1 million viewers in the final week of ratings season, which is 30,000 more than when Grimshaw was hosting.

Image: Getty

Prince Andrew “terrified” to leave Royal Lodge amid eviction rumours

Prince Andrew is refusing to exit his royal residence as renovations are carried out on the Windsor property, despite advice to the contrary.

According to The Daily Mail, the 63-year-old is putting his foot down over fears that he “might never get back in”, likely in response to circulating rumours that his brother - King Charles - wants to evict Andrew from the home as part of his grand plan to scale back the monarchy.

While Andrew no longer holds any official royal duty after his involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, he still maintains his claim on the mansion with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.

And now, that same property is set to become “virtually a building site”, with Andrew having hired builders to undertake necessary repair work on the property, tackling everything from damp to mould.

As a source told Page Six, Andrew was reportedly advised to vacate “while work was undertaken” over the course of a few months, “but he’s refused because he’s so terrified that the property might be seized in his absence.

“In the meantime, Harry and Meghan vacated Frogmore after being told they needed to leave to make way for Andrew but he is refusing to go there, even though he was given the keys.

“He’s allowing Eugenie to stay there. She’s just given birth to her second child so while she recovers and gets back on her feet, she’s staying in Frogmore to be near her mum and dad.”

And while some believe the temporary move would make sense for Andrew, his fears remain at the forefront.

“It’s become farcical,' an insider told The Daily Mail. “Andrew has roof repairs scheduled later this summer which will take several months to complete and has been advised that staying in the house during those renovations could prove problematic. But he is reluctant to leave.”

Buckingham Palace has yet to comment on the rumours, but another source is adamant that the Duke of York will remain in the property, regardless of alleged drama and financial woes.

As Page Six noted, Andrew has been making the most of money left to him by the late Queen Elizabeth to fix up the house, with one source explaining that “he’s been quite open about where the money has come from because he doesn’t want people to think he’s come up with it through other means.

“The costs are expected to reach into the hundreds of thousands of pounds.”

And, as they surmised, Andrew “is adamant that he will see out the end of his [75-year] lease at Royal Lodge.”

Images: Getty

Samantha Armytage has responded to the clickbait articles claiming that there is a “feud” between her and former Sunrise co-host David Koch after her noticeable absence at his farewell lunch.

The Channel 7 star took to Instagram to respond to a headline that originally ran in the Daily Mail, which read: “Sure there’s no feud? Samantha Armytage noticeably skips David Koch’s farewell lunch as the departing Sunrise host is joined by Natalie Barr, Mel Doyle and Larry Emdur for the star-studded send-off”.

She posted a screenshot of the article which she called “nasty” and “wrong”.

“Rich & I had to attend a funeral yesterday after I appeared on Sunrise,” she explained, “I was invited to Kochie’s farewell lunch and had to politely decline.”

“Usually, I ignore the Daily Mail nonsense, (& I realise posting like this only gives them oxygen) but these multiple, daily attacks are absurd.

“I could have told them my plans, if only they’d asked 🤪 (not that it’s any of their business!) then perhaps they wouldn’t have to make things up. Kochie addresses feud rumours with Sam Armytage

David Koch has addressed the rumours of a falling out with his former Sunrise co-host, Sam Armytage for the first time.

Kochie responded to the rumours while appearing as a guest on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Wednesday morning, after the radio hosts grilled him about reports of their strained relationship.

The rumours spread after Armytage left Sunrise in March 2021 and hosted a lavish farewell lunch with some of her co-workers, with Kochie notably absent.

The next day he publicly claimed that he “didn’t know about it [happening].”

But on Wednesday, Kochie told Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O that he “didn’t think” he was on “bad terms” with Armytage.

“No, I don’t think … We didn’t end on bad terms,” he said.

When asked if Kochie had spoken to her ever since he evaded the question and answered with: “Don’t forget she very publicly said she wanted to get out of the media, and that scrutiny.”

“She sent me a really nice note on the announcement. As did Mel,” he added, revealing the well-wishes from his former co-hosts.

“I think I’m seeing Sam tonight at a function. I saw Mel at Fashion Week and sat next to her there.”

Armytage and Kochie hosted the breakfast show together for eight years between 2013–2021.

The rumours had started after there were relentless reports about Armytage being estranged from the Seven cast and crew.

Image: Getty

Kochie addresses the rumours of his “secret hot son”

When David ‘Kochie’ Koch announced he would be departing from Seven’s hit breakfast TV series Sunrise after 21 years at the helm, there was a lot to talk about.

From the future of the show to the reasons behind his exit, theories and rumours ran wild, although one thing nobody had seen coming was the attention turned on Kochie’s son, Alexander ‘AJ’ Koch.

Kochie had thanked his family - wife Libby and their four children, Samantha, Brianna, Georgina, and AJ - while announcing his resignation live on-air, and circled back to AJ a few days later after reports of his “secret hot son” made the rounds online.

The Daily Mail had run with the angle that AJ was “just as business savvy as his father”, but that he was happier working behind the scenes than he was having his face on it. And with 12 years experience behind him as general manager for the Kochie-founded and family-run business Pinstripe Media, that much seems true.

They went on to note that AJ was the “spitting image of his father at a younger age”, citing his dark hair and full beard.

“Daily Mail had a story on ‘Kochie’s hot son hidden away in the family business’,” an amused Kochie informed his friend and co-host, Natalie Barr, during their morning appearance.

“His sisters have gone to town on him, let me tell you. Saying, ‘receding hairline’, all that sort of stuff.”

Sibling fun aside, family seems key to the Koch clan, particularly with how many times it has come up in the wake of Kochie’s big news, and how his entire decision stemmed from the desire to spend more time with them - and, of course, their financial business.

“It's time for me to work business hours and for Libby and I to have a bit more flexibility to enjoy our burgeoning family,” he said in his initial public announcement, “to travel and focus on our family business interests in Pinstripe Media and the Ausbiz business channel.”

And his fans, rivals and colleagues - while devastated to hear they wouldn’t be seeing his face on their screens each morning - were happy for him (well, almost all of them were), sharing their well-wishes for the TV star and his family in the next big chapter of their lives.

“I’m sad to see you go but wishing you all the best for your future especially time with Liv & the grandkids & PAFC,” one wrote. “Thank you for many many years of hosting Sunrise, I’ve enjoyed every minute.”

“Will miss you! Enjoy your decision to keep normal hours with your family,” another said.

And one opted to share a personal take on his departure, writing of how “our daughter is 21 and I’ve watched you since the first episode- this [is] how I remember the 3 of you[,] with a newborn and then the next one 7 years later. Congratulations on your retirement and spending time with your own family instead of ours.”

Images: Facebook

Jackie O responds to wild rumour following divorce and massive weight loss

Jackie O has responded to rumours that she will appear on The Bachelorette following her 18 kg weight loss and divorce.

Speaking on The Kyle and Jackie O show on Tuesday morning, the radio host was quick to shut down the rumours after her co-star Kyle Sandilands poked fun at her alleged new gig.

“Congratulations on your new TV gig,” Kyle cheekily remarked.

“That's all untrue Kyle. That's bulls**t. No, I'm not doing that,” Jackie O immediately quipped back.

“That's great, because I wouldn't have been happy about that,” Kyle replied, and then went on to say why Jackie O was too good for the show.

“I put you up on a pedestal. You are a great woman that has achieved amazing things in your life, [you] raised a great daughter... And you're an award-winning, wonderful friend,” he said.

On their Wednesday show, Jackie O shut down the rumours further by saying that no amount of money would have convinced her to go on the show.

She confirmed that the Channel 10 producers begged her to appear on the dating show, but has firmly said no, because she didn’t want to be around a “bunch of gronks”.

“It came through my manager and I said "absolutely not". No way would I ever do something like that. It is great for your entertainment, but what about me,' she said.

She also hinted that the producers were willing to pay her anything she wanted, hinting at a possible $300k salary, which is the same amount her friend, Sophie Monk, got paid.

“They asked how much would it cost. Nothing, I wouldn't do it. I would just not do it. Not the Bachelorette. They are just making TV in the end and you are just going to get gronks, get weirdos... I just don't think it is for me,” she justified.

This comes after Woman’s Day magazine alleged that Jackie had signed up to the franchise in hopes of finding the right one on Monday.

Images: Youtube

Kochie responds to Chris Brown rumours as his replacement is confirmed

Sunrise viewers are set to see a new face alongside Natalie Barr following the news of Kochie’s shock departure.

One famous face in particular was rumoured to fill his shoes, but Channel 7 has now confirmed his successor has been appointed, with an announcement to be made on Monday, June 5.

Kochie will host his final edition of Sunrise on Friday, June 9.

The TV presenter, who holds the title of the longest-serving breakfast host in Australian history, will remain a valued part of the Sunrise team and the Seven Network, covering big financial news as a “guest rather than host”.

Kochie was visibly emotional when he shared with viewers that he was stepping away from the “world’s best job”.

Fellow presenters Natalie Barr, Lisa Wilkinson and Sam Mac posted online to praise and congratulate him on his 21-year run on the show.

Following his announcement, Kochie appeared on The Kyle & Jackie O Show.

Sandilands asked Kochie if there was any truth to the rumour that ABC presenter Stan Grant, who recently resigned from hosting Q+A, would be taking over his role.

“Um, no, I don’t think so,” he replied.

Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson proceeded to speculate over who is and isn’t likely to fill the position, including Today host Karl Stefanovic and former Channel 10 star Dr Chris Brown, who is making his way to Seven in July 2023.

“Well, it’s obvious they’re not going to take Karl,” Sandilands teased.

“And it’s not going to be Dr Chris Brown either, is it?” Henderson asked, to which Kochie just laughed.

“No, you can’t put a vet on there,” Sandilands joked. “How insulting. That’s like saying Mr Whippy’s gonna come and take over my job, like come on man, that’s ridiculous.”

When pushed for a clue as to who his replacement might be, Kochie told the hosts that there is “plenty of great talent working on Sunrise”.

“Look, to use football parlance, I’ve talked to the list managers, it’s time for the next generation to come through and they've got a lot to choose from,” he said.

“All will be revealed next Monday, and then I leave on Friday.”

Kochie also shared he won’t be moving back to his hometown of Adelaide when he finishes up with Sunrise.

“I will stay here in Sydney,” he said. “Our kids are here, grandkids are here, and our family business is here.”

In a statement from Channel Seven Kochie explained that he believes it’s time to change his routine after spending 21 years of waking up at the crack of dawn.

“I know I'm going to miss it enormously, but it's time for me to work business hours, and for (his wife) Libby and I to have a bit more flexibility to enjoy our burgeoning family, to travel and focus on our family business interests in Pinstripe Media and the Ausbiz business channel,” he said.

“As everyone knows, I'm a finance nerd so you'll still see me pop up every so often on RBA board meeting days or covering other big financial news, but as a guest rather than host.

“Coming up to 20 consecutive years as Australia's most-watched breakfast show is a nice moment to exit stage left with an enormous sense of pride and gratitude. Thank you for the privilege.”

Rumoured replacement for Kochie on Sunrise

David Koch announced the shocking news that he will be stepping down from his hosting duties on Sunrise after a 20 year run.

The news of his departure has quickly turned the attention to who will be replacing him.

The veteran TV presenter announced he was quitting on air, saying it was “now time to work in business hours” and “focus on our big family”.

His last show will be June 9.

A clue hinting at a possible replacement for Koch comes after former Ten personality Dr Chris Brown announced he was leaving the network and has signed a two-year deal with Seven, believed to be worth a staggering $1 million per year.

The network is yet to reveal plans for Brown, 44, with people now speculating he could be filling Koch's shoes.

In a statement after announcing his new contract, Brown revealed he would be starting “in the second half of the year and beyond with Seven”, while a network spokesperson confirmed he was officially commencing work “in July”.

Brown had been with Channel 10 since 2008 with his beloved program, Bondi Vet.

More recently, he co-hosted I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here with Julia Morris, and starred in The Living Room, which was “rested” in 2023.

It is understood that Brown was frustrated with the lack of opportunities on offer to him at Ten, particularly after The Living Room axed production.

He told The Daily Telegraph in December 2022, “I think you’d have to check the TV dictionary,” referring to the show being on “hiatus”.

“The Oxford TV dictionary defines hiatus as cloudy with a chance of coming back but it is very unclear. Who knows what is happening.”

Meanwhile, Koch said on air that he was “finding it harder” to continue in the role.

“I have decided to hang up the boots as co-host of Sunrise. After nearly 21 years and over 5300 shows, 16,000 hours of TV, it is now time to work in business hours and have a bit of flexibility to focus more on our big family and the family business. And frankly, my football club as well. (Koch is chairman of the Port Adelaide Football Club.)

“So after 20 consecutive premierships in the breakfast TV ratings game, I’m frankly finding it harder to get off the ground to take those marks and I think it’s time to bring [in] the next generation.”

Long-married couples said not to know each other as well as newlyweds

You would think decades of marriage together would give older couples plenty of time to get to know each other but an interesting new study suggests otherwise, finding that couples who have been together for decades are worse at predicting what their partner likes than newlyweds.

The study, published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, tested young couples, aged from 19 to 32, who had been together for an average of two years and older couples, aged from 62 to 78, who had been together for at least 40 years. Each of the 116 participants was presented with a series of descriptions (of foods, movies, house designs and so on) and asked to rate his or her preference and predict how their partner would rate the item. They were also asked to estimate how many of their predictions were correct.

And well, overall, we’re not great at knowing what our significant other likes, even though we think we are. Young couples got 42 per cent of their predictions right and older couples only predicted 36 per cent of their partners’ preferences, when both couple groups overconfidently estimated they would get 62 per cent of answers right.

“This is surprising because, compared to younger couples, older couples had much more time and opportunities to learn about each other's preferences over the course of their relationship,” the team of psychologist wrote.

They suggested that younger couples may be more motivated to understand their partners during the early stages of a relationship.

“Another reason could be that older couples pay less attention to each other, because they view their relationship as already firmly committed or because they think they already know their partner well,” said one of the researchers, Dr Benjamin Scheibehenne of the University of Basel.
